A y an presentan algo nuevo; the presenta algo ya identificado.
- Conocido por los dos: both people know which thing it is.
- Único en el contexto: there is only one in that place or moment.
- Ya mencionado antes: the noun appeared earlier in the text.
- Segunda mención: I have a bag. The bag is on the table.
- Ya identificado: Where is the water in the bottle?
- Claro por el contexto: Please close the door of this room.
- En una lista conocida: We have the eggs and the bread for breakfast.
- Con frases que lo definen: the train to Machu Picchu costs more.
Ejemplos comunes son the eggs, the bread y the water.
Sofia asks her mom about breakfast. She asks about the eggs first, and the bread is on the table.
Diego asks if there is any water in the bottle. Valeria says there isn’t any, so the water is missing.
Ejemplos claros son the sun, the moon y the sky.
Así aparecen the newspaper, the radio y the train.
- Cosas del mundo natural: The earth moves around the sun.
- Elementos del entorno: We watched the stars in the sky.
- Superlativos: He is the best student in the class.
- Servicios conocidos: The police help the people of the town.
- Transporte habitual: They always take the train to the city.
La frase He is the tallest boy describe a un alumno concreto.
Algunos ejemplos son in the morning y at the same time.
Así se dice the computer o the violin.
The con lugares, grupos y servicios
Muchos nombres geográficos llevan the.
Por eso se dice in Peru y no in the Peru.
- Ríos y mares: the Amazon, the Pacific Ocean and the river near the school.
- Cordilleras y desiertos: the Andes mountains and the Gobi Desert.
- Países con nombre plural: the United States and the Netherlands.
- Grupos de personas: the young, the poor and the tourists.
- Servicios de la comunidad: the bakery, the library and the fair.
The river near the school es un buen ejemplo.
The poor y the rich son dos ejemplos frecuentes.
Así se dice the bakery in Medellin.
Algunos lugares comunes no llevan the cuando indican una actividad. En esos casos se escribe at school o in hospital.

Situación: The notice at the Central Library is about the books and the card.
Desarrollo: Every student needs the card to borrow the books for two weeks.
Resultado: The words the card and the books refer to known items in the notice.
The card y the books se conocen dentro del texto.
Situación: Mateo asks about a trip in Peru and wants to know the price of the train.
Desarrollo: He asks how much the train to Machu Picchu costs and how many trains go in the morning.
Resultado: The price depends on the season, and many tourists buy the tickets in advance.
|---|---|---|
| Segunda mención | Algo ya mencionado antes | I have a bag. The bag is new. |
| Conocimiento compartido | Algo claro para los dos | Where is the water? |
| Único en el contexto | Existe una sola cosa | The sun is bright today. |
| Superlativos | El mejor de un grupo | He is the best student. |
| Nombres geográficos | Ríos, mares y cordilleras | The river is near the school. |
| Grupos de personas | Un grupo de la sociedad | The tourists buy the tickets. |
